Previously in our blog, we discussed some different helpful CrossFit tips for beginners. If you read our blog, you will probably remember that we mentioned the importance of nutrition. While there are several nutrition options available to you, one popular nutrition plan that almost everyone has heard of is the Paleo diet. However, how many of you actually know what the paleo diet entails? Although the word “diet” is in the name, we prefer to refer to is as a nutrition plan because this is not meant to be another diet fad, but rather a lifestyle.
The Paleo diet, otherwise referred to as the caveman diet, is based on the notion that people should go back to eating whole, unprocessed foods because they are more helpful and beneficial to our bodies. Before we mastered agriculture, humans had a diet that consisted of whole, unprocessed foods such as plants, meat, and seafood. While there are several different variations of this nutrition plan, the basic foundation is the same. The foundation is to eat whole, unprocessed, nourishing foods such as meats, eggs, seafood, and veggies. Fruits and nuts should be had in moderation. Ideally, with the paleo nutrition plan, you should avoid foods that could harm your digestive system. Sugars, foods containing gluten, and any processed foods should all be avoided.
There has been some debate as to whether or not the paleo nutrition plan is actually healthy. Nutritionists and other researchers have gradually warmed up to idea of this nutrition plan and have admitted that people who regularly practice this plan, generally tend to be more healthy and have more energy. We realize that not all nutrition plans are for everyone. The Paleo plan is just one option.
